IIIT Allahabad has a strong research culture and offers research opportunities in various fields such as Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Cybersecurity, and Information Technology. The institute also has collaborations with several industries and research organisations. Only candidates who have successfully completed their respective professional degree programmes or are enrolled in their last year or semester are eligible to apply for research programmes at IIIT Allahabad. At the time of application submission, the candidate's cumulative score, or CGPI, must have been at least 65%. Before finally enrolling in the programme, candidates must, in every case, pass with 65% marks or an equivalent cumulative grade point average. SC/ ST/ PH candidates are eligible for a 5% relaxation.

IIIT Allahabad has instituted the Centre for Short-Term Certification Programmes (CSTCP) with the primary aim of conducting online courses through suitable online platforms provided by various companies. IIIT Allahabad offers a PG Certificate programme in Machine Learning and Big Data Analytics through CSTCP. The objective of this course is to introduce participants to the intricacies of data Science and the techniques of machine learning. This course will expose participants to hands-on experience with popular and in-demand tools in the BDA and ML areas and has been designed with the intention of imparting practical problem-solving skills to participants, which in turn will enhance their prospects for career growth in this emerging domain.

IIIT Allahabad offers four programmes: BTech, MTech, MBA, and PhD across four departments, namely Applied Sciences, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Information Technology, and Management Sciences. IIIT Allahabad accepts students depending on their admission exam scores. Students are chosen by the institute based on their performance in national exams like JEE Main, CAT, MAT, GATE, XAT, and CMAT, among others. Candidates must attend the counselling sessions in order to be admitted to the BTech and MTech programmes. Hence, for BTech and MTech, respectively, the seat allocation takes place through JoSAA and CCMT counselling. Applicants who are applying to IIIT Allahabad's PhD programme must sit for an interview.
