It is up to the student to decide in which field he/she would like to research on. You must complete your Bachelors, Masters and also do Ph.D., preferably for RnD work. The area of study would be your choice on the basis of your interest and career plans.

Engineering is a better option after class 12th as most of the concepts in many engineering disciplines have base from class 11th and 12th. Disciplines like mechanical, electrical and electronics have good future scope. Engineering from top IITs/NITs will be the best option.

You may evaluate B.Tech in chemical / petroleum/ biotechnology engineering or B.Sc & M.Sc in chemistry education for him depending in his interest and preference.

In order to crack CAT, you need to score very high in numerical ability section of CAT examination. If you are weak at mathematics, you may face difficulties therefore, you are advised to work on your numerical and data interpretation abilities by taking external support.

Biotechnology is good, you should go for it.
