B.Tech mechanical and automation engineering graduates are eligible to undergo 1-year graduate marine engineering course. As mechatronics is mechanical and automation engineering, I am of the opinion that you are eligible to join merchant navy after 1-year course. Different shipping companies have their own leave policies. Some companies hire crew on fixed short period contracts where there may not be paid holidays. Companies which hire the crew for long duration contracts have the provision of paid holidays.

You can join merchant navy directly after class 12th by clearing the NDA (National Defense Academy) exam or IIT-JEE.
Following is the eligibility criteria for the same:
1. Candidates must have completed class 12th with PCM subjects from any recognised institute.
2. You must have at least 55% in class 12th.
3. Must pass a medical fitness test for sea service under standard norms and with eyesight 6/6 with no colour blindness.
