It was founded as the Agricultural College of the State of Michigan. The university became co-ed in 1870. Michigan State University was established in 1855. It is the nation's pioneer land-grant university. It was initially called as Agricultural College of the State of Michigan. In 1861, its name changed to State Agricultural College. Then, in 1909, the name of the college changed to Michigan Agricultural College. In 1925, Michigan State College of Agriculture and Applied Science and then, in 1955, it became Michigan State University of Agriculture and Applied Science. Finally, in 1964, the university became Michigan State University.
