The complete NDA selection process is basically this: written exam, SSB interview, medical examination, and then the final merit list. UPSC conducts the written exam, and candidates who clear the written cutoff move to the Services Selection Board for Intelligence and Personality testing.

The first stage is the written exam. It has two objective papers: Mathematics for 300 marks and General Ability Test for 600 marks, so the written total is 900 marks. This is the first real filter, and only those who get the required qualifying marks move ahead.

After clearing the written exam, candidates have to register online on the recruiting website and then report for the SSB interview on the date given in the call letter. The SSB is not a simple interview. It is meant to test intelligence, personality, and officer-like qualities. UPSC also states that NDA uses a two-stage SSB procedure: on the first day there is a screening based on Psychological Aptitude and Intelligence testing, and only those who clear Stage I go to Stage II and the remaining tests.

For Air Force preference, there is one more step. Candidates who qualify SSB and are willing for the flying branch also have to clear CPSS, which is the Computerised Pilot Selection System. UPSC clearly says this is required separately for eligible Air Force flying candidates.

Then comes the medical examination. Candidates recommended by SSB are examined by a board of service medical officers, and only medically fit candidates can be admitted. The notification also mentions appeal and review medical board provisions for candidates declared unfit.

Finally, the merit list is prepared. UPSC says candidates are placed in a combined list based on total marks from the written exam and SSB, and final allocation depends on vacancies, eligibility, medical fitness, merit, and service preference.
