NIT Nagaland is not a deemed University. It is an autonomous Indian Government College. It is a fully funded by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. It was established under an Act of Indian Parliament. The establishment of NIT Nagaland was included in the Eleventh five- year plan of the Indian Government (2007-2012) for giving technical education to the students of the state of Nagaland.

National Institute of Technology, Nagaland was established by the government of India in 2009. However, the first batch of NIT Nagaland students studied at NIT Silchar (2010-2014). Later on, NIT shifted to the home state of Nagaland in September 2012. Thereafter, National Institute of Technology, Nagaland was ranked a remarkable 200-250 band in the NIRF ranking in the year 2022. This institute is also known as NITN located in Dimapur district, Nagaland.

The eligibility criteria for NIT Nagaland is getting atleast 75% in class 12 ( 65% for SC/ST/PwD) and cracking JEE mains. For scoring a good rank in JEE Main a candidate must:
- Segregate topics and work diligently and complete them in time.
- Prioritise high weightage topics
- Prepare proper notes and end time revision techniques
- Practice is the key
- Take mock tests because ghere is negative marking in the exam.
