Not so good.
Even though the Training and Placement department of NITT shows above 95% placement rate,it is only after going through an initial screening process called CPC'S conducted by immediate seniors of the same branch.Only about 40 out of a current batch of 60 are eligible to sit for placements after successfully passing the CPC process.From these 40 only 12-15 people get placed in core Metallurgy companies like Tata Steel,TVS,Tata Motors,Reliance etc.The rest opt for Management companies(generally Analyst roles) like KPMG,PWC etc and some other companies like Amazon, Flipkart.
The packages offered for core companies isn't that good and is around 9 for Tata Steel and others average 6 LPA.Management Firms offer a better initial pay of above 9 and hence the trend.Despite all these some of them go for higher studies,some take care of their own business and some startup few companies.
Bottom Line
If you are looking into this field as a prospective career option due to passion/interest well and good.But if its just for a good initial pay,not so much.

In case, you don't get your desired college, don't settle for something mediocre. Instead of settling down for some mediocre college, it would be better if you try for some good private university. Many reputed private universities are offering B.Tech chemical engineering. They have different criteria for admissions. Some offer admission on the basis of JEE scores, some offer admission on basis of their own tests and some offer admission on the basis of both. Some even offer direct admission on basis of class 12th marks. Some of the universities also offer scholarships on basis of your performance in class 12th or JEE or even during the course. You can check the details of any of the reputed universities like VIT, Lovely, SRM, etc. All these universities have wonderful infrastructure and world-class facilities to offer to students apart from good placements.
