No, they are not the same. GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) is an all-India entrance exam that allows candidates to apply for IITs, NITs, IISc, and some other applied science institutes/universities. GATE exam can be given only by those candidates who have applied science degrees like B.E and B.Tech, to M.Tech and M.Sc by research integrated Ph.D. and direct Ph.D. program. IIT JAM (Joint Entrance Test for M.Sc) is an all-India entrance exam that allows candidates to apply for IITs, IISERs, IISc, and NITs.
