I don't know much about mechanical engineering from Vellore Institute of Technology but I can tell you what mechanical engineering is from Manipal Institute of Technology.
First of all, craze of mechanical engineering is increasing day by day. Secondly, it is very difficult to get a seat in good colleges for mechanical engineering. Mechanical branch of Manipal Institute of Technology is rated very high in India.
Mechanical branch of Manipal offers SRF - Student Research Forum for students to go deep into concept and discover the hidden concepts in their areas of Interest. This makes them become good engineers. Apart from this, there are many student run projects which are rated very high and are not available in many colleges in India. Projects like Formula Manipal - Racing car built by MIT students which won several prizes, Team Manipal Racing - an off road racing car, Solar Mobil - First 4 seater solar car in India launched this month only, and several others.
From placement point of view, companies like Mercedes, Tata, Toyota, etc. recruit students from MIT Manipal.

Group Discussion & Personal Interview (GDPI)
Shortlisted candidates will be called for group discussion and personal interview based on the percentile/scores obtained in Common Admission Test (CAT)/ Xavier Aptitude Test (XAT).
Final selection
Candidates are selected based on Common Admission Test (CAT)/ Xavier Aptitude Test (XAT) score/percentile, performance in group discussion and personal interview.
Candidates who have cleared all the subjects of graduation in their first attempt will be preferred.
