Let us face the reality here, when you step in south there are only a handful good engineering colleges in south India, those being IIT MADRAS, TRICHY, ANNA University, VIT, SRM, and a few more. If you happen to land up in any other college then first of all you lack exposure as there colleges have students from all regions of India. Also, if you plan to go abroad for further qualifications these colleges happen to make your job a lot easier because of their collaborations with many international universities. I think it's too late for deciding to join VIT, Vellore or Chennai campus because in both the campus admission has been closed for all the branches but for your information I can say that if your rank is good like under 6000 then there will be many options for you in terms of branches including you can get CSE branch also with some specialisation here. Also whatever fee structure you have seen in brochure is just for category 1, not other categories if your rank is low then also you can get CSE branch but fee structure will change for you means fee structure of category in which you are.

Hello,
I would say that mechanical engineering has better placements than biotechnology as only few colleges offer it and some of those colleges are not good too.
So you may opt for mechanical engineering.
It is better to choose a good college than a good course as it will help you in future.
If you want to do biotechnology you may do it From IIT Madras, Anna University or SSN College of Engineering.
