These are two different institutions in Buffalo. For international students it can be a little confusing, therefore the student should select the correct option while applying. University at Buffalo (UB) is officially called the University at Buffalo, The State University of New York (and this is sometimes shortened to SUNY Buffalo). UB is the premier flagship university center of the SUNY system. There is a second, different school with a similar name and is known by multiple names; SUNY Buffalo State, Buffalo State, Buff State, Buffalo State College, and SUNY College at Buffalo.

The University at Buffalo has rolling admission deadlines. This means that Buffalo University accepts applications from international students and admits students until all available seats are filled. Some degree programs fill their seats quickly. Considerations for scholarships for new students including international students begin in January. Therefore, it is recommended that the student should apply as early as they can in the last year of secondary school. The University at Buffalo recommended filing date is February 1 for the Fall applicants and October 1 for Spring and earlier is better.

Studying in the United States is always a costly matter. In such cases, scholarships do a great help to international students. There are several types of scholarships available to international students. Some scholarships are available as interest-free loans while others are in the form of grants. Financial aid at the University at Buffalo is government money that is available only to qualified U.S. citizens and permanent residents. State and federal financial aid are not available to international students. However, Buffalo University offers merit-based scholarships to qualified students, including international students.

GED stands for Graduate Equivalency Degree or General Educational Diploma. This is for high school students who are close to finishing and getting their Diploma but do not quite get there. In such cases, students may take a GED test that will indicate whether or not they have a high school level of education. The GED test has four main areas of testing; Mathematical Reasoning, Reasoning through language arts, Science and social studies. This test is recognised and accepted by nearly all US colleges, employers and universities.
