No, it is not compulsory for Indian students to take SAT or ACT if they are applying to the University of Maryland. The university provides test-optional policy, which means it is on students either to submit test scores or not.

International candidates must fulfil all the following requirements: University of Maryland Undergraduate Admissions

  • You should have official grades and a certificate of completion from a national high school test if you completed secondary school outside the United States (such as the GCSE or Baccalaureate).

University of Maryland Postgraduate Admissions

  • B average or 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in a curriculum leading to the award of a bachelor's degree from a regionally approved college or university or an identical degree and status from a similar international institution is required for routine entry to the Graduate School.

It is moderatly competitive for international students to get admission UMD. The University of Maryland acceptance rate is around 45%, which means that out of every 100 applicants, 45 are accepted. The admission rate of UMD College Park places it as the fourth-least accepted institution in Maryland. The Admissions Committee considers 26 unique factors as a part of the university’s holistic review process. In addition, test scores and transcripts, the university reviews your LORs, essays, short-answer responses and activities resume are also required.

Courses in STEM field has also been ranked decently in the last 5 years. The Mathematics course was ranked at 35 position in 2022 according to ARWU Shanghai Rankings whereas Physics was positioned at 24th rank. QS World Ranking also placed Physics and Astronomy at 44 position in 2022.
