As Director General at NAMTECH, a higher education and skills initiative of Arcelor Mittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India), Pillai has been instrumental in the ideation and establishment of this innovative post-graduate institute.

At NSDC, he has played a pivotal role in the launch of innovative initiatives like the Skill Impact Bond and the Open Digital Ecosystem for Skills. He has also led several impact-driven large-scale skilling projects, across India, as part of government and multilateral agencies, as well as Big Four consulting firms.
