GATE 2026 Exam Format

The GATE exam is conducted for 30 papers, out of which 28 papers are held in single session and two papers are conducted in multiple sessions (two shifts). Based on the shift and difficulty level, the scores will be calculated. Check below -

  • For papers conducted in a single session: actual marks obtained by the candidates will be used for calculating Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering scores. 
  • For papers conducted in multiple sessions: Normalised marks will be calculated corresponding to the raw marks obtained by a candidate. The GATE result 2026 is calculated based on the normalised marks.

A good rank in GATE is another commonly asked question among aspirants, and to break it down, the answer to this question, commonly varies depending on the institute. 

  • To get GATE AIR under 10, GATE score above 900 will be required, which can be roughly around 85 to 90 marks in GATE.
  • For AIR rank under 50, candidates need to secure at least 75 to 85 marks in GATE 2026.
  • For AIR rank under 100, 70 to marks in GATE can be required. 
  • For top IIT admissions, starting GATE safe score can be around 700-800. However, for top branches/specialisations, above 900 is required. 
  • For top NITs, safe score can be around 650 - 750.
  • For PSUs, a GATE AIR under 200 is required.

If you are seeking admission in NIT Surathkal MTech, then GATE is mandatory. Students applying for non-MTech programmes do not need to appear for GATE. For M.Tech however, GATE followed by the centralised counselling is mandatory.

No, students can not get admission in IIT Roorkee MSc with GATE scores. The institute accepts IIT JAM score only. No other tests including GATE are accepted. Students also have to appear for the centralised counselling to get a seat.

IISc Bangalore GATE cutoff 2026 for the ECE course for the General AI category was 650 in round 1. For the OBC AI category, the round 1 cutoff for the same course was 600. This difference in the score says that the competiton for the General AI category was higher than the OBC AI quota.

Yes, you can secure a seat in M.Tech course at IcfaiTech by taking the IMET. This is the school's own entrance test for those who do not have a GATE score. If you pass the IMET and personal interview, you are eligible for admission.
