GATE 2026 Exam Format
The GATE exam is conducted for 30 papers, out of which 28 papers are held in single session and two papers are conducted in multiple sessions (two shifts). Based on the shift and difficulty level, the scores will be calculated. Check below -
- For papers conducted in a single session: actual marks obtained by the candidates will be used for calculating Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering scores.
- For papers conducted in multiple sessions: Normalised marks will be calculated corresponding to the raw marks obtained by a candidate. The GATE result 2026 is calculated based on the normalised marks.
Why is GATE marks vs rank important?
GATE marks vs rank 2026 is the most searched topics every year, especially right after the exam. It helps aspirants to make the right decision, whether they want to opt for MTech, research or go for PSU jobs. Let’s try to understand the importance of GATE 2026 marks vs rank.

Rank determines your Admission Chances
In GATE, two students can score same marks, but can get different ranks based on the difficulty level of GATE 2026 question paper, the number of registered candidates, and overall performance. For multi-session paper, such as Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) and Civil Engineering (CE), the conducting authorities use GATE normalisation process, as the difficulty level of question paper can vary. Thus, to ensure fairness among students, normalised marks are calculated.
For admission to IITs, NITs, and IIITs, rank is considered first. Hence, your GATE AIR decides the following -
- Which institute are you eligible for admission
- Your target branch
- Whether you have cleared the GATE minimum qualifying cutoff mark.

PSUs also consider GATE ranks for recruitment
Many top PSUs, such as NTPC, AAI, and IOCL, shortlist students based on the AIR, not marks. Even 2 to 3 marks in GATE can shift your rank.
Also, many candidates look for, what rank corresponds to 70 marks in GATE? So, you see the importance of what GATE rank holds. The GATE rank and mark can differ every year, based on the factors that are mentioned above. So, GATE 2026 marks vs rank analysis, helps to predict competition and trends.

GATE marks vs rank: Helps a lot in Counselling and Cutoff Planning
The GATE counselling is conducted by two major portals - COAP and CCMT. COAP is used for admission to IITs, anc CCMT is used for admission to NITs, IITs, and GFTIs. During the counselling, the institutes do not release marks you obtained in GATE, but scores in the form of closing rank, and category-wise cutoff rank.
With that, GATE 2026 marks vs rank, will help you analyse and estimate -
- GATE college prediction- refer to GATE college predictor
- Plan your backups and set realistic college options based on your scores.
