The new National Education Policy lacks the vision to motivate students to be competitive and good in studies, the West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee while criticising the new National Education Policy 2020 said that it lacks the vision to encourage young students to be competitive with studies. On July 29, the Union Cabinet approved the new NEP 2020. The Chief Minister while questioning the merit behind abolishing the ranking system in the school education system and board exams under the new policy, said that "The struggle of the students is very dear to them. They compete to excel in their exams. The new policy is removing the ranking system. That won't motivate students. We don't support the new education policy NEP, we are writing letters. There are students who come from very humble families, they endure many hardships and then when they rank in exams, they see that as an achievement. We can't deprive them of that emotion. We are with the students."

Trinamool Congress had previously objected the new policy accusing the Centre of trying to bypass the state government over a subject on the concurrent list.

Promoting the regional sentiment, Mamata Banerjee urged students to return to Bengal and serve the state. She announced new universities for the students of Bengal and advised them to believe in unity and diversity, her political message was subtle and yet unmissable.

Remembering the legendary personalities from Bengal, Mamata also proposed one university on the name of BR Ambedkar for the minorities and students from other backward families.

"Students are our future. You all should remember unity and brotherhood. There are people who play cast politics, want to play divisive politics on lines of religion. But blood has no colour apart from one. We are all together and should always remain," she said.

The Chief Minister also urged the students to also opt for streams like neurology in medical science, data science, space science and research to help Bengal in the future after tough lessons have been learnt by the world during this the current Covid-19 pandemic.  She was interacting with students at the felicitation program of meritorious students who passed the board exams this year.
