A student in Karnataka logs in at ssp.karnataka.gov.in. A student in Bihar has three portals to pick from. The right one depends on category and class. A student in Assam has no state portal at all. Assam sends its students to the National Scholarship Portal instead.

Many students lose their application window here. Search results still show portals that shut down years ago. Some list a department that no longer runs the scheme. This article gives you the correct list. It covers the portal name, the department in charge, the application route and the official link for all 36 states and union territories. What is State Scholarship 2026-27

A state scholarship is money given by a state government to students of that state. The funds come from the state budget. A state department writes the rules. State officials check and approve the forms. This is what makes it different from a central scholarship. It is also why every state works its own way.

State Scholarship vs Central Scholarship

Central scholarships are run by ministries of the Government of India. The rules stay the same for a student in Kerala and a student in Punjab. State scholarships do not work like this. Each state fixes its own income limit. Each state picks its own list of eligible courses. Each state sets its own last date. It also decides where you apply. So there is no single national deadline for state scholarships.

Who Can Apply for State Scholarship

Domicile is the first check. You must be a resident of the state you are applying in. A domicile certificate proves this. Category is the second check. Most state schemes are built for SC, ST, OBC, minority and EBC students. A few are open to general category students under merit or EWS rules.

Your institution is the third check. Your school or college must be recognised by the state or by a recognised university. Students of big state universities like University of Delhi are covered. So are students in small government-aided colleges. Private institutions must be listed on the portal. Only then can your form be verified.

States With a Single Scholarship Portal

Sixteen states and UTs run one portal for all their schemes. Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Odisha, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Haryana, Jharkhand, Kerala, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Mizoram and Nagaland fall in this group. Delhi, Himachal Pradesh and Punjab also run a state portal. They send some schemes to NSP as well. This is the easiest setup for a student. One registration. One login. One dashboard for every scheme you qualify for.

States With More Than One Scholarship Portal

Eight states split their schemes across separate portals. These are Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Sikkim and Tripura, West Bengal. The split is usually by category. Sometimes it is by class level. In Bihar, BC and EBC students use one portal. SC and ST students use another. In Madhya Pradesh, college students go to the higher education portal. Tribal students go to MPTAAS.A wrong portal here does not just delay your form. Most of the time the form is never processed.

States That Apply Through the National Scholarship Portal

Twelve states and UTs have no working state portal. Students there apply on scholarships.gov.in. The list covers Assam, Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir, Meghalaya, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh. Six union territories are also on it. These are Chandigarh, Puducherry, Ladakh, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, and Lakshadweep.

Here are fifteen states in detail. Each one gives the portal name, the department in charge and the route to follow.

UP Scholarship 2026-27

Uttar Pradesh runs one of the biggest state scholarship programmes in India. Students apply on the UP Scholarship Portal at scholarship.up.gov.in. Two departments share the work. Samaj Kalyan Vibhag looks after SC, ST and general category schemes. The Backward Class Welfare and Minority Welfare departments handle their own categories. All of it sits on the same portal.

MahaDBT Scholarship Maharashtra

Maharashtra puts all its scholarship schemes on one platform. It is called MahaDBT and sits at mahadbt.maharashtra.gov.in. Many welfare departments load their schemes here. Social Justice and Special Assistance is one. Tribal Development, Directorate of Higher Education and Directorate of Technical Education are others.

Digital Gujarat Scholarship

Gujarat has no scholarship-only portal. It has a citizen services portal called Digital Gujarat. Scholarships sit inside it as one service. The address is digitalgujarat.gov.in. Several welfare departments use it. Schemes cover SC, ST, OBC, minority and general category students at both pre-matric and post-matric level.

Swami Vivekananda Merit Cum Means Scholarship (SVMCM) West Bengal

Swami Vivekananda Merit Cum Means Scholarship (SVMCM) is a scholarship scheme of the Government of West Bengal. It is meant for students who score well but come from families with a low annual income. The scheme covers a long list of courses. Class 11 and 12th Class students can apply. Applications are submitted online at svmcm.wb.gov.in. Our SVMCM Scholarship article covers eligibility and registration. 

Aikyashree Scholarship West Bengal

Aikyashree is run by the West Bengal Minorities Development and Finance Corporation. Applications go through wbmdfcscholarship.in. It comes under the Minority Affairs and Madrasah Education Department. The scheme covers minority students from primary school up to research courses. Pre-matric and post-matric applicants use the same portal.

Odisha Scholarship Portal

Odisha built one common platform. It is called the Odisha State Scholarship Portal, or OSSP. The address is scholarship.odisha.gov.in. The ST and SC Development, Minorities and Backward Classes Welfare Department owns it. Other departments have moved their schemes here too. Higher Education and School and Mass Education are among them.

Bihar Post Matric Scholarship

Bihar is the state where students most often land on the wrong portal. It runs three. BC and EBC students apply at pmsonline.bihar.gov.in. SC and ST students apply at scstpmsonline.bihar.gov.in. MedhaSoft at medhasoft.bih.nic.in handles school level schemes.

The Education Department and the Directorate of Secondary Education manage these. Students of Patna University and other state institutions must pick the portal that matches their certificate.

MP Scholarship Portal 2.0

Madhya Pradesh also splits its schemes across three portals, and the split is by department rather than by category alone.

Most college students need MP Scholarship Portal 2.0 at hescholarship.mp.gov.in. MPTAAS is for tribal and SC applicants. Shiksha Portal is for school students. Students at Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya and other state universities use the higher education portal.

SSP Karnataka Scholarship

Karnataka runs the State Scholarship Portal. Most people call it SSP. The address is ssp.karnataka.gov.in. The Centre for e-Governance built it. It works under the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms. Thirteen welfare departments have moved their schemes onto this one platform.

Before SSP, departments ran schemes on their own. Some sent students to the national portal. The state built SSP to bring it all together. Students at Bangalore University and other state colleges apply here for pre-matric and post-matric schemes.

Rajasthan SJE Scholarship Portal

Rajasthan handles scholarships through the Social Justice and Empowerment Department. The portal is sje.rajasthan.gov.in. The login is different here. Rajasthan uses the state SSO ID system. So you need an SSO account first. You then open the scholarship service through it.

Post-matric schemes for SC, ST, OBC, minority and EBC students are covered. Students of University of Rajasthan follow the same SSO route. Keep your SSO details safe. They are used for many other state services.

Dr. Ambedkar Scholarship Portal Punjab

Punjab runs the Dr. Ambedkar Scholarship Portal at scholarships.punjab.gov.in. The Welfare of SC and BC Department manages the schemes. So does Social Justice, Empowerment and Minorities. Punjab follows a mixed route. Some schemes are handled on the state portal. Others go through the National Scholarship Portal.

Read the scheme notification before you register. Applying on the state portal for an NSP scheme is a common mistake in Punjab. Such forms are often never processed.

Tamil Nadu Scholarship

Tamil Nadu does not have one common scholarship portal. Different welfare departments run their own.

BC, MBC and Minorities Welfare runs its schemes separately. Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare runs its own. Students of University of Madras should first check which department owns their scheme. Only then go to that portal.

Har-Chhatravratti Haryana Scholarship

Haryana has one scholarship platform. It is called Har-Chhatravratti and sits at harchhatravratti.highereduhry.ac.in. The Directorate of Higher Education runs it. All state schemes are in one place. This makes Haryana one of the simpler states for applicants.

You register once. After that you can apply to any scheme you qualify for. School and college schemes are both covered. Your institution verifies the form first. It then goes to the department for approval.

e-Kalyan Jharkhand Scholarship

Jharkhand uses the e-Kalyan portal at ekalyan.cgg.gov.in. The Department of Scheduled Tribe, Scheduled Caste, Minority and Backward Class Welfare runs it. One point to note. Bihar also uses the e-Kalyan name for a separate welfare portal. Make sure you are on the Jharkhand address.

Pre-matric and post-matric schemes are both handled here. Students at Ranchi University and other state colleges apply through this portal. Your institution must be listed and verified first.

Assam Scholarship

Assam has no scholarship portal of its own. Students apply on the National Scholarship Portal at scholarships.gov.in. Three directorates handle the schemes at the state end. These are the Directorate of Higher Education, the Directorate of Welfare of Scheduled Castes and Backward Classes, and the Directorate of Tribal Affairs (Plain).

Verification still happens at the state level. But the form itself is filed on NSP. Students at Gauhati University should create their NSP One Time Registration early. Do it before the window opens.

CG Scholarship Chhattisgarh

Chhattisgarh runs two portals, split by education level rather than by category.

The Tribal and Scheduled Caste Development Department manages both. Some websites name Social Welfare or Higher Education as the owner. That is wrong. School students and college students must use their own portal. The wrong one will delay your form.

Types of State Scholarships

State schemes come in a few basic types. Find the one that fits you. It will cut your search time.

Each state writes its own rules. But the points below show up in almost every scheme. Only the exact figure changes from state to state.

 Income limits are very different from state to state. Check the scheme notification on your state portal. Get the exact figure before you apply.

Documents Required for State Scholarship 2026-27

Keep scanned copies ready before you open the form.

• Aadhaar card, with the number linked to your bank account

• Domicile or residence certificate of the applying state

• Caste or category certificate, where the scheme is category based

• Income certificate issued by the competent revenue authority

• Marksheet of the last qualifying examination

• Bank passbook first page showing account number and IFSC

• Admission receipt or fee receipt from the current institution

• Bonafide or institution verification certificate

• Recent passport size photograph and scanned signature

Your name must match on every document. Even a small spelling gap between your Aadhaar and your marksheet can send the form back. This is one of the most common problems.

How to Apply for State Scholarship 2026-27

The steps below apply to most state portals. States using the National Scholarship Portal follow the same flow on scholarships.gov.in.

1. Open your state scholarship portal from the table above. Confirm the address before you type anything.

2. Click new registration. Enter your Aadhaar number, mobile number and email to generate your login.

3. Save the registration number and password sent to your mobile. You will need them later for the status check.

4. Log in and complete your profile with personal, address, academic and bank details.

5. Open the scheme list and select the scholarship that matches your category and class.

6. Fill the application form. Match your income figure and your last exam percentage with the certificate.

7. Upload the documents in the format and size the portal asks for.

8. Review everything once, then lock or finally submit the form.

9. Download and print the submitted form. Many states still want a signed hard copy. Give it to your institution.

10. Note the application ID and track it until the status shows sanctioned.

How to Check State Scholarship Status 2026-27

Every state portal has a status link on the home page. Log in with your registration number and date of birth. Some portals ask for the application ID instead. The current stage will then show up.

You can also check from the bank side. Use the Public Financial Management System once the amount is released.

Status Meaning

Payment and DBT

State scholarships are paid by Direct Benefit Transfer. The money goes straight into your bank account. There is no cash, no cheque and no middleman. Your account must be active for this to work. It must also be linked with your Aadhaar. A dormant account or a missing Aadhaar link is the top reason a sanctioned scholarship never arrives.

Can You Apply for State and Central Scholarship Together

You can hold a state and a central scholarship together only if both scheme notifications allow it. Most do not. Almost every scheme has one clause on this. It says the student must not be getting another scholarship for the same course in the same year. File two applications for the same course and one will be cancelled. Sometimes both are.

There are a few exceptions. A merit award and a fee reimbursement scheme are sometimes allowed together. A hostel allowance and a maintenance allowance from two different sources may also be fine. Read the scheme guidelines on the portal before you apply for a second scholarship. 

Common Mistakes to Avoid in State Scholarship Application

Most rejections every session come from these few mistakes.

• Applying on the wrong portal in a state that runs more than one, especially Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh

• Using an old portal address from a search result after the state has shifted to a new one

• Entering an income figure that does not match the income certificate

• Filling a name that differs from the Aadhaar record or the Class 10 marksheet

• Giving a bank account that is not seeded with Aadhaar

• Uploading documents above the file size limit, which fails without any warning on some portals

• Skipping the final lock or submit step after filling the form

• Not handing the printed form to the institution where the state requires it

• Missing the institution verification deadline, which is often earlier than the student deadline

• Waiting for the last week to apply, when portals slow down under load
