Stay patient and look from every perspective and analyse every aspect before taking the final decision.

“If you learn from defeat, you haven't lost.”

This proverb is true in practical aspects as well. If you've prepared diligently throughout the entire year or for 2 years but still due to some unfortunate reasons, you are not able to get a good rank, the first thing to do, is not to lose hope. Many students often get disheartened after the results that they are unable to perform well even in the next attempt. So, don't let this be the case with you.

Adopt the strategy of “Analyse and Improvise.”

In case, the students haven't scored good marks, then there must have been a void either in their preparation or its execution. The first thing they should do is to analyse.

As per my experience, I realised that I got anxious while sitting in the examination of the hall and committed trivial mistakes which no one would do otherwise. So, it is always better to analyse what went wrong in the first place.

After that you have 3 options:

  1. Drop a year and prepare for the next attempt
  2. Choose from the colleges available at the marks obtained in the present exam
  3. Wait for subsequent counselling sessions

Let's discuss each of the options in detail.

1. Drop a year and prepare for the next attempt-

If it the first attempt along with the board exams, then thinking about this alternative is not much complicated. This would help in learning more and studying with complete focus on clearing JEE Main.  In the drop year, one could focus entirely on the JEE Main exam, and the added advantage of having studied the entire course at least once would help in succeeding in the next attempt. Hence, complete diligence and determination is required to clear the exam.

On the other hand, dropping a year for a third attempt could be a very risky step to make, and one must be confident before deciding in favour of dropping another year. The students should be aware with their shortcomings and know precisely the reason not to score well in the previous attempt, and on the top of that, if they are certain that another year would help in resolving all these shortcomings, then they could decide to take another year off. The students who have doubts about their preparation could resort to the other options which we are going to discuss further.

2. Choose from the colleges available at the marks obtained in the present exam

It is obvious that everyone who starts preparing for JEE Main aims to get into an IIT or NIT, however, with a limited number of seats, it is practically impossible for each one of the students to get admission in the top colleges. Statistics show that there are more than 4500 engineering colleges in India for BTech and B.E. courses. There are several skilled faculty and ample resources available in colleges all over India and not just in a few renowned colleges.

The state universities and the private colleges available for engineering offer a wide range of opportunities to choose from. The basic concept of teaching and the essence of engineering would remain almost the same in every college, therefore, the students could broaden their field of selection and look beyond IITs, especially, if they have already attempted the exam twice.

The students who are getting a good college with decent faculty should not hesitate to opt for it. To get a clear idea, they could also contact the students from various colleges to know about the quality of education provided in their college. This would help in finalising the college.

3. Wait for subsequent counselling sessions- There is a reasonable probability that you might get a college in the subsequent counselling sessions. Most of the students are not sure about the result of subsequent counselling and end up making decisions in haste due to delayed counselling sessions.

First, analyse the whole situation and decide after analysing each aspect. I have even seen cases where, in mop-up counselling rounds, the students got into very good state university colleges. So, one must wait and at least appear in each counselling round in which they are qualified to attend. There is a great option of opting for private colleges as well if they are within your reach. The services and placement levels in many renowned private colleges are no less than those in IITs. Hence, choose wisely.
