M.Tech for Working Professionals

New Delhi, June 9 - For the first time IP University will provide admission to its MTech (weekend) programme through a common entrance test (CET). There are two programmes on offer -- information technology and electronics and communication engineering (ECE). The last date to apply is June 30 and the entrance test will take place on July 7. The result of the entrance test will be declared on July 14. The counselling for admission will take place exactly a week after the result is declared -- on July 20.

Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) qualified students can also apply and would be given preference over others. "The entrance test aims to remove the differential score given by various universities located in different corners of the country. It is targeted at bringing uniformity in the selection procedure," says Colonel PK Upmanyu, joint registrar, GGSIP University.

The weekend programme will be run at two places -- IGIT (Indira Gandhi Institute of Information Technology) and the University School of Information Technology. Both are in the university campus.

There are 60 seats in each of these two programmes, which are of three years' duration. The programmes will cater to only working professionals and classes will be held on Saturdays and Sundays so that one can straddle job and studies simultaneously. Minimum eligibility criterion to apply is to have a minimum of one year's post qualification experience as on July 30.

The ECE programme will be run as a coeducational collaborative programme wherein half of the seats (out of the total of 60 seats) will be reserved for female candidates. There is no such reservation in the IT programme, which will by run at the University School of Information Technology.

There are full-time MTech programmes also wherein the admission process is still open including MTech in engineering physics, nano science and technology, chemical engineering, computer science and engineering, information technology, digital and wireless communication, VLSI design, signal processing, microwave engineering, information security and digital communication.

Some of these programmes will be run at the university's campus while others will be run at the affiliated government colleges -- Ambedkar Institute of Technology and Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC). "Though private colleges affiliated to the IP university are also allowed to run MTech programmes and they even have AICTE approval but as of now, only government colleges are running these programmes," says Professor Yogesh Singh, controller of examination, GGSIP University.

When asked about the importance of the MTech programmes, Singh has this to say: "At the beginning of your career, it doesn't matter whether you are BTech or MTech because companies have a system wherein they put every fresh engineer in the corporate training (process) for a year's time. But after spending a few years in the industry, the qualification becomes determinant for promotion. Normally senior positions are held by the engineers who are more than just engineering graduates."

But in order to rise to senior positions, isn't it important to have an MBA rather than an MTech? "In IT companies, where research is a prime focus, an MTech is normally preferred over an MBA. Several MNCs are opening research divisions in India such as Synopsis and STMicroelectronics which spurs the need of MTech professionals," adds Singh, who himself is an MTech as well as a PhD in computer science from NIT, Kurukshetra.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

• In order to apply for MTech, one must have a minimum of 60 per cent marks in BE/BTech/ MSc/MCA.
• While applying for the weekend programme, one ought to mention clearly ‘Weekend' in the OMR form in the column titled ‘name of programme'.
• The common entrance test (CET) will be a two-and-a-half-hour test comprising 150 multiple choice questions from various areas of IT, CSE, electronics and communication. The syllabus for CET will be available on the university's website.
• Though one year's experience is mandatory, one mark will be given for an additional year of experience upto a maximum of ten additional marks.
