How I chose my course and college: Tirth Patel
After class 11, I had to decide what I wanted to do after class 12 and there were multiple options.
I tried to discover my passion. After a long process of thinking and taking opinion from my friends and family, I realised that I was passionate about computers and technology. So, I decided to go for it. But in this field also, there were two choices - Computer Science and Information Technology. Now, again, I had to decide which subject I wanted to pick as my base subject. I thought for a while and decided to enrol for Information Technology, because I was not interested in hardware and there were many subjects in Computer Engineering that made me feel nervous. So, my plan was set to get admission in Information Technology.
Then came the turn to find good universities in the area/district/state. Since I am from Ahmedabad, I looked for a state university, which is generally preferred by most of the students who have average marks and average financial status. There is an ACPC commission in Gujarat which helps students with admission. So, after clearing class 12, I applied for it and found my rank in the list of selected applicants. According to my rank, I was able to get admission to a nearby and one of my preferred colleges named Silver Oak College of Engineering and Technology.
For admission in a state university, two scores are taken into consideration. The first one is class 12 score, and the second is JEE Main score. I got 70% in class 12 and 90 marks in JEE Main. So, my rank was around 12,600. Previous year’s cut-off for admission in Silver Oak College of Engineering and Technology was set at 15,000. So I managed to secure a seat there.
I did not go for any tuition classes to prepare for JEE Main. I prepared for the exam all by myself. The key to getting a good college for engineering is to get 100+ marks in JEE Main.
My college is divided into two - 1. Silver Oak College of Engineering and Technology, 2. Aditya Silver Oak Institute of Technology. I was admitted in the former.
I remember the first day of my college-actors Hrithik Roshan and Yami Gautam had come to our college for promotion of their film ‘Kaabil’.
My college has a very good library with a good number of educational books and lots of books on different subjects. The infrastructure is quite good as well. Although there is no playground but the campus had enough space for us to play. The faculty members of my college are really friendly and well educated- they were from NITs and IITs. My college was inclined more towards extra-curricular activities than theoretical study. It also has a placement cell which is a boon for any student.
Now, when it comes success and failure, I feel, it depends on your knowledge and development during your college days. You need to gain analytical, logical, and reasoning skills. My college provided soft-skills lectures along with regular classes. My college successfully trained me to achieve my goal.
