With admissions to its undergraduate and postgraduate programmes open till April 21, GGS Indraprastha (IP) University is all set to shift base to the Dwarka campus for the new session starting in July this year. Vice Chancellor Prof Dilip K Bandyopadhyay talks to HT Horizons about the university’s new programmes, the new 63-acre campus and its new focus on research
What are the new programmes you are offering from session 2010-11?
We have added two new branches of engineering – electronics and communication, and IT -- at IGIT (Indira Gandhi Institute of Technology) from this session.
Apart from these, there is no major change in the new programmes.
When is university shifting to the Dwarka campus?
We will shift to Dwarka Sector 16 for the new academic session. It is a 63-acre campus with hostel accommodation for 800 students, a swimming pool, a tennis court and much more.
With bigger infrastructure to support your initiatives, do you have any plans to initiate new projects?
Yes, we want to enter research in a big way. Currently, we award 25 doctorate degrees every year, which we are planning to increase by 100 per cent in the next two-three years. Our long-term aim is to award 60-70 PhDs in a year.
Gearing up for this, we have put a plan in place wherein we will announce PhD admissions every six months. The major areas of research are information technology, biotechnology and management (Recently, the university held an entrance test for PhD admissions for the first time).
What are the funding options for PhD students?
We are attracting students with junior research fellowships from Council of Scientific and Industrial Research. Those who haven’t been able to get a scholarship can work as teaching assistants in the university to make some money. We have also created 20 fellowships with the help of 10 departments.
What plan have you set in motion to become a university with international standards?
We are exploring opportunities to start exchange programmes with foreign universities. We have been following a semester system from day one. We already have 250 foreign students studying here. We want the numbers to grow fast and we intend creating a separate hostel for them in our new campus.
