What is WBJEE?

WBJEE is conducted annually to select eligible students for admission into the participating engineering colleges of the state. The entrance exam will have questions from Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. Admissions will be done based on WBJEE scores, but students with JEE Main scores will also be eligible for admission into a certain percentage of seats.

WBJEE consists of two papers – Paper 1 (Mathematics) and Paper 2 (Physics and Chemistry). Both papers have to be attempted to secure a valid WBJEE rank.

What is VITEEE?

VITEEE is one of the popular private engineering entrance exams. Students who want to study in one of the campuses – Vellore, Chennai, Bhopal and AP can attempt this exam. The computer-based test is held in various slots to assess the student’s aptitude in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Aptitude and English. No other entrance exam score is considered for VIT admissions.

For admissions into all participating campuses, the students need to secure a VITEEE rank between 1 to 1,00,000. However, the candidates who secure a rank above 1,00,000 will be eligible for only VIT Bhopal and VIT AP admissions.

WBJEE vs VITEEE: What is the level of the exam?

While WBJEE is a state-level exam and VITEEE is a private exam, the level of the examination is almost similar. Both exams have syllabus similar to the 11th and 12th class board examinations. However, VITEEE has additional subjects of English and Aptitude in their question paper. Students have to prepare additionally for English and Aptitude, as the question will have 5 and 10 questions from these subjects, respectively.

As per the online Shiksha poll, 51% of the total participating students agreed that the 12th standard syllabus is enough for WBJEE preparation. However, 25% of students disagree and state that WBJEE should be prepared separately. 14% of the students agree that the 12th standard syllabus is enough, but WBJEE question papers should also be checked.

WBJEE is held in one day, while VITEEE is conducted in several slots. A normalisation procedure is adopted by the authorities to make sure that the slots are assessed equally. In terms of difficulty, WBJEE questions are prepared according to the state board curriculum, while VITEEE questions focus on core concepts, understanding and problem-solving. There is no correct answer as to which exam is more difficult. The decision on which exam to attempt is based on the student’s preferred institute - VIT campus or WBJEE participating colleges.
