The answer to this question of whether an average student can get into IIM can be both yes and no depending on the definition of an average student.
- Based on Academics (Class 10/ Class 12/ Graduation): While a student with average scores in Class 10, Class 12 and graduation with a good CAT score certainly has good chances of getting a call from IIM-A, chances are less for someone with an average CAT score.
- Based on student category (General or Reserved): While it is tough for a General category average student to grab a seat at IIM due to high score requirements, a reserved category student can get admission being at average scores as well.
- Based on past work experience, diversity and other factors: Gender and academic diversity is also a factor on which students are shortlisted at IIM. IIMs judge the past academic category based on the degree obtained by the students before MBA and then a weightage is allotted based on that. For Engineers, the percentage for scoring the highest marks is higher as compared with other streams
- Performance in selection rounds: Once you make it to the final selection rounds, i.e., AWT/PI process, it can be considered a fresh start. At this stage, students can forget their past average-ness but definitely require good grasp over the past subjects as academics-related questions are asked in the interview.

For admission to MBA (or PGP) 2024 batch at IIM Shillong, the CAT test will be conducted on November 26, 2023. Aspirants of IIM Shillong are required to appear for the exam in Computer Based Testing mode at the allotted test centres. CAT exam 2023 will be held in three slots:
Morning slot: 8:30 AM to 10:30 AM
Afternoon slot: 12:30 PM to 2:30 PM

IIM Shillong Admission 2024 to PGP course is based on CAT 2024 scores. IIM Shillong admission process is conducted in two phases. Candidates seeking admission to IIM Shillong MBA are required to appear for CAT. Candidates who clear the CAT cut off for IIM Shillong admission will be invited to appear for further rounds of selection.
After CAT, the candidate are required to appear for the GD-PI round and a Written ability Test. The final admission offers are made on the basis of performance of the candidates in CAT, GD-PI, WAT and overall profile.
IIM Shillong process of shortlisting candidates for GDPI is independent of those of other IIMs. IIM Shillong sends an intimation mail to the registered email of the shortlisted candidates. The Candidates are required to fill out the interview form and upload the same on the Admission Portal of IIM Shillong.
IIM Shillong, then sends GD/PI call letters to only those candidates who have filled the interview form correctly.
IIM Shillong does not send any intimation to those candidates who are not shortlisted, or who haven't filled the interview form correctly within the stipulated time.
Based on the performance of the candidate in GDPI, a merit list for final admission offers is prepared. IIM Shillong also prepares a waitlist, according to the ranks of the candidate, for admission in case any candidate do not accept the admission offer.
Candidates who select IIM Shillong as their preference while filling the CAT 2023 application form can check their shortlist status on the official website when PI form filling starts. Post the shortlisting process of candidates, they are screened for the PI round. To express interest in participating in PI round of IIM Shillong, the candidates have to fill an online application form. Interview calls will be made to candidates in Feb 24, tentatively and an email regarding the same will be sent out to all selected candidates. Yes, IIM Shillong offers two year full time MBA course. Admission to IIM Shillong MBA is done on the basis of CAT percentile, performance of the candidate in the personal Interview round and other factors such as academic profile, work experience (if any) and diversity.
IIM Shillong also offers a PGP Working Executive (MBA WE) programme designed for professionals to navigate change with new knowledge and business practices while keeping the work-life balance. Candidates can leave the programme after completion of core courses and attain an Executive Program in General Management (EPGM) certificate. The final CAT cutoff for IIM Shillong admission ranges between 90 to 93 percentile.
The IIM Shillong qualifying CAT 2022 cut off was 90 percentile with a sectional cutoff of 75 percentile. Candidate who secure the required CAT percentile are invited for further rounds of selection, the WAT and GP-PI round. In 2023 admission process of all IIMs, WAT was not conducted.
