Delhi University is a premier and one of the oldest Universities of the country. It was established in 1922 as a unitary teaching and residential University. It is well known for its high standards established for teaching, research work and eminent scholar faculty. Delhi University has witnessed many educational reforms until now & benchmarked itself among the top universities of the world.

From time to time, the University has observed multiple amendments in its education system. As a result, it has emerged as a pioneer in the field of education. DU is planning to introduce Semester System for Sciences stream students from this academic year. This is really a great initiative. If this scheme gets successful for Science stream, it will be followed for all the streams. The Semester System is expected to help students score good marks. However, students and teachers have shown mixed response to the proposed Semester System.

A section of students is in favor of the proposed system and feels that this would help students score well, and at the same time make their approach towards their course more aggressive and serious. However, the other section of students feels that it will create unnecessary pressure on students. Despite all this, there is one more issue with implementation of this new scheme and it is unavoidable. Delhi University does not have that much infrastructure to implement this system. Almost 50% seats for teachers in DU are vacant. To make this project a success, DU needs a good number of new appointments for these vacancies. This project will create extra burden on the present number of teachers to cater to the desired requirements for this system.

A delegation of the Delhi University Teachers Association (DUTA) met President Pratibha Patil on June 03 & urged her to set up an inquiry against the Vice Chancellor for allegedly violating the University Act and implementing the Semester System for the undergraduate science courses.

"We met the president and urged her to institute an inquiry against Vice Chancellor Deepak Pental under the DU Act, Section 7-A (2) for committing gross violations of the act in implementing the semester system for the science courses," said DUTA president Aditya Narayan Mishra.

"We also requested the president to immediately withhold the implementation of the semester system in the science courses in the capacity of Visitor of the university," he added.

DU has witnessed an episode of high-end drama over the implementation of the semester system. 12 under-graduate science courses will follow the semester system from this session. This statement brings lots of opposition and protest from various departments over the proposed syllabi. It is not much welcomed by most of the departments, but once it will get implemented it will bring many changes in education scenario.
