History: The mother of all under-graduate disciplines
It is said that those who ignore history are often forced to repeat it. This in itself is neither a justification nor rationalisa- tion for pursuing History as an academ- ic discipline. History by its very nature, scope, form, structure, subject matter and values, stands out as an important disci- pline to be earnestly pursued. History, in as much as it incorpo- rates all human activ- ity, is the mother of all disciplines.
The University of Delhi offers one of the best course structures in History. Students will have to study nine papers in all, over a three-year period along with two papers in English and Hindi, and one interdis- ciplinary paper where the students have the option of studying `Environmental Issues in India' or `Ethics in Public Domain'. The nine papers are spread over 
three years with two papers in the first year, three papers in the second and four in the third. The course structure includes four papers in Indian History, one on Social Formations, one on China and Japan, one on European History and one on the Rise of the Modern West.
There are certain optional papers also, like `History of USA' or `History of USSR'.
The student technically has the option to choose on of the papers, but it is sub- ject to availability of teachers in respec- tive colleges to teach the paper offered.
The opportunities for those who study History do not end at the civil services.
The students have the option to go for Law, HR Studies, MBA and Journalism.
Those who develop deeper interest in the subject can take to academics, both at school and college levels. There is also the opportunity to specialise in Archaeology and Heritage Management.
