I am a student of Class XII and will appear for the Board exams next year. I am very shy, sincere and respect others. I have three-four friends in my class and have always stayed away from the company of unsavoury elements in my class. One of the toppers in the school has been friends with me since Class IX.

I used to share a strong bond with him. However, this year his attitude towards me has totally changed. He has started hanging out with a group of bad boys and has also started abusing me. Maybe he is not comfortable with me any longer. Seeing this, my other friends have also turned away from me.

Now, I am feeling very lonely and don't have a single friend to talk to in my class. My friends as well as other boys have started teasing me. I feel disheartened and demoralised. Should I remain as I am or should I change myself so that I can fit in with the others? How should I handle this situation? - Saurav.

You are journeying through some of the toughest challenges of adolescence. During this age, one goes through the turmoil of physical as well as emotional development. It involves processes such as acquiring a stable temperament; being open to criticism from peers; and often being overwhelmed by diverse feelings (e.g. doubt and shame). Therefore, it becomes important to engage in coherent thought processing, which leads to healthy growth.

For starters, develop assertive and effective communication patterns with your friends in a way that encourages them to be less judgmental towards you. Work to build trust in your parents and caregivers so that you can share your feelings with them. They can give you unconditional acceptance, provide support and model pro-social behaviour. Enhance your self-esteem and inculcate resilience.

Class XII is a crucial time from the career perspective. Therefore, you should focus on your goals and establish a timetable that leaves less time for such emotional distractions. Also, work on a balanced diet and exercise regularly to build up stamina.
