Mumbai University no longer 5-star, at least not on paper
Mumbai University is one of the renowned Universities in India; even it has its place among top 200 universities of the world. In India thousands of students every year from every part of the country come across to take admission in this university. It has created its
name and its fame among the students. To get admission into this, students need to score high and must be brilliant and goes through different entrance exams and other procedures. This university has produced many toppers and experts of different fields. This big university has another story in the box.
Mumbai University which is among the top university of India and world has failed to get its accreditation (certification of competency, authority, credibility) renewed even three years after it lapsed. The university’s accreditation was expired in 2006. After a years extension it has not yet applied for the same.
Moreover, the institution keeps instructing colleges affiliated to it to apply for fresh accreditation, or to renew the old one on time before it got expired. According to the rules, all the institutions for the higher education need to get accreditation from National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) once in five years. NAAC is an autonomous body of the University Grants Commission (UGC) which handles the ratings. Institutes need to seek renewal every five years.
Interestingly, the university got its accreditation in 2001 and received 5 star rating and according to the rule it expired in 2006 as it has five years validity. It got one year’s extension to get it renew, but the university failed to do so. The university still has not applied for the renewal of the accreditation. It still requires three more months to complete the procedure and all formalities for paper work. This is the big irony of the slow system that the university which is giving accreditation to other colleges fails to get its accreditation renewed on time. It is shameful for the university that it is not technically accredited in last three years and still giving blame to the authorities and other technical department for the delay.
