Teachers approach ministry over DU’s four-year UG course
Confusion, accusation and debates seem to be the second nature of Delhi University now-a-days.
In the latest development, eight prominent teachers of the varsity have sent a long letter to the Ministry of Human Resource Development, discussing the negative factors of the proposed four-year undergraduate programme (FYUP).
The teachers include Shahid Amin (history), Aditya Bhattacharjea (economics), P K Dutta (political science), Satish Deshpande (sociology), Krishna Kumar (education), Uday Kumar (English), Shobhit Mahajan (physics) and Apoorvanand (Hindi).
The letter claims that the faculty is not opposed to the implementation on FYUP, but should be deferred to July, 2014. It also punctures DU’s claim, stating that there is no evidence of sufficient “public discussion and debate” and neither were teachers, who wanted to participate, included in the crucial decision-makings. Rather, the 61-member academic team, was decided "through selective process." Moreover, deans of faculty, college principals, heads of departments and teachers known for their work on pedagogy and curriculum were not included in the meetings.
After a hue and cry over the changes in economics, political science and English syllabus, now the new B.Com course is also facing teachers’ wrath. Apparently six papers that include important topics like office management, tax and secretarial practice have been dropped. Teachers are also questioning the introduction of new course on foreign exchange since the paper on international business does not feature in the new curriculum.
In more news, DU is planning to introduce a separate examination cell for conducting the exams and evaluation under FYUP.
