To become a lawyer or advocate, it is important first to understand their role in the judicial system. While every advocate is a lawyer, it is not the case that every lawyer is an advocate. Not every lawyer is an advocate. If you hold a degree, you will be defined as a lawyer, but to be an advocate, you need to pass the All India Bar Examination. Who is a lawyer?

If you have completed a law degree, then you are already a lawyer. You are also qualified to give legal advice. But to formally represent a client, you need to have a Certificate of Practice. But that doesn’t mean that you have to sit idle. You can still work in corporate, legal research, compliance, etc. You must be thinking on how to become a lawyer? Q:   What is the duration of CLAT PG exam?

The CLAT PG Exam will be held for duration of two hours; i.e. from 2 pm to 4 pm. Candidates have to answer 120 questions in the given time frame. The scores of CLAT LLM 2027 score will be accepted by 19 NLUs in the country. 

Q:   What is good rank in CLAT exam?
A: 

A good rank in the CLAT exam for general category students is under 1,000–1,500 to secure admission in top-tier National Law Universities (NLUs). A rank under 500 is considered excellent for the top 5 NLUs, while a rank up to 3,000–5,000 can still secure a seat in newer, mid-tier NLUs. 

Q:   What is the duration of AIBE Exam?
A: 

The AIBE Exam will be held for three hours and thirty minutes. Candidates must note that there is no negative marking in the exam. 

Q:   How many NLUs participate in CLAT Exam?
A: 

As of 2026, 26 National Law Universities (NLUs) participate in the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT). These universities offer undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) law programs, with over 5,600 seats available in total. NLU Delhi is the only exception, conducting its own entrance exam (AILET) rather than participating in CLAT

Who is an Advocate?

To become an Advocate, you need to clear the AIBE. Once you clear, the BCI will issue the Certificate of Practice. This gives you the license to practice in court anywhere in the country. You will also get the right to appear, act and plead before courts and tribunals.

How can a lawyer become an advocate?

If becoming a lawyer is tough, it is another challenge to become an advocate. You can become a lawyer by completing your law degree. You won’t be allowed to represent your clients in the court. But to become an advocate you need to fulfill certain criteria. To add your name in the Bar Council list you need to pass AIBE Exam. Once the Council will issue you the certificate you will be eligible to represent your client in court.
