I’ve always been a big believer in choice and free will. Post my class X results, I had a choice of taking up either Commerce or Science stream. Here, choice soon turned into uncertainty and confusion because at that point this choice felt like a monumental decision, which I couldn’t take lightly. My family and other well-wishers intervened and I chose Commerce. Like the road not taken, this made all the difference in the world. I don’t come from a business focused family, my parents work for the Government and they envisioned a similar career line for me. However, taking up and studying the Commercial Sciences has given me a healthy appetite for business and the corporate world and taught me so many more things that in retrospect has changed me for the better.
While I had always been rather precocious as a child, I was an introvert and rarely spoke in a group or a crowd. I got good marks in class XII and got into a good college and this introverted quality soon morphed into a more open and social nature in me. The kind of friends I had and the experiences I got to share with them changed me for the better and I grew more confident in my abilities, started learning how to build better focus and discipline, and learnt to manage stress as well.
Once my college stint was over and I graduated with first division, the world felt very wide and rather unwelcoming for me. For some time, I tried following my parents’ footsteps and applied to work for the government, but that avenue seemed closed to me even after multiple attempts. I then started applying for banks and got through to a small private bank from Kerala called South Indian Bank at a clerical position. There, I learnt the ins and outs of the banking and business industry and built up a solid work ethic. But something was missing; I wanted to go back to the classroom and learn and grow a bit more. So I quit that job after just 9 months and started to prepare for Management entrance exams as MBA seemed like a natural progression for a person like me, career-wise and personality-wise.
So I gave the MAT exam and started applying for various colleges in Delhi NCR. I got selected in a few colleges and chose to come to Jagannath International Management School, Kalkaji based on its repute and testimonials I’d gotten from trustworthy seniors who had studied there previously. They had nothing but good things to say about its faculty, its placements and general life here and it seemed a good fit for my expectations.
So here I was, and by the time the first month was over, I realized that I had taken a good decision by coming here. I have ingrained new habits and disciplines since coming here, and I feel content learning something or the other, no matter how insignificant or trivial sometimes, almost every day. The faculty couldn’t be more welcoming to all my questions and issues and I’m opening up and getting to know more and more varied people and learn and enjoy their experiences as well.
Make no mistake about it, MBA is hard, especially for someone taking a gap of two years from education. But it is fulfilling here so far at JIMS, and while the going does get very tough and excruciating at times, I have good people around me here who are always ready to give me an assist, and I’m very optimistic for my future career placements here as well.
