In today’s world of high competition, it is important for everyone to excel in their respective fields. A certain procedure is followed to get admission in top B-Schools or give an interview for a job vacancy in a reputed company. There are several rounds for selection such as Aptitude, Group Discussion, HR Round (Personal Interview), etc. In this article, we are going to discuss the parameters of a Group Discussion (GD).

A Group Discussion is a systematic and purposeful interactive process wherein ideas are exchanged in a systematic and structured way.  Important parameters taken into account for assessment during GD are as follows:

  • Fair knowledge of the subject: Fair knowledge of the topic is required to speak relevantly. Evaluators would judge your capability on the basis of your knowledge on the given subject. Make sure that you speak with confidence and in relevance to the topic.
  • Good communication skills: Communication is one of the important elements in GD. A student must have good command on the language. They should be fluent while speaking and give pauses whenever required.
  • Active listening: In a GD, good listening skills are also important as while discussing the speaker should be well aware of the points discussed by others. Always let the other speaker complete before starting to discuss your point.
  • Body language and posture: Maintain a good posture while speaking. Include gestures like hand moments, eye contact, etc. as and when required during the GD. Always speak confidently and politely; this would help in creating a good impression on the evaluator.
  • Great leadership skills: Taking initiatives like guiding your teammates, resolving their queries, helping them as per their requirements and so on makes you a good leader. If the participants start deviating from the topic during the discussion, always try to bring it back on the given topic; this might work in fetching marks Most of the times evaluators selects the candidates who have good leadership qualities.
