Students' Speak: 6 important skills to ace your GD-PI preparation

A GD helps the recruiter to take a good decision in the selection of the candidate and it is very important. Now, I am going to tell you what is the basic skill which is important in a candidate during GD.
Listening skill
Listening is different from hearing. If you can differentiate between these two things then it will be easy for you to understand. Listening involves your attention on the topic and your response. Your response may be verbal or just your body language.
You can relate this skill with book reading. As you read a book with involvement at some point, it feels like you are listening to it from the author. The same level of connection is expected from you in a GD.
Awareness
Here awareness is not about your attention during the GD. It means your knowledge and information about GD topics. A GD topic can be a current issue like Triple Talaq, CAA and Abolition of 370, etc. It may be an international issue like Bush fire Australia, Amazon fire.
It can be any social, political and environmental issue. The important point is this that they are checking your critical, analytical, problem solving and decision-making skill. You must not be provoked by these topics and do not misbehave with any candidate. Put your points and facts to support your argument rather than fighting with others. Remember a person who is fighting between GD will never qualify. No organization needs an employee with a negative attitude. So, your awareness with facts and data can play a big role in your GD interview.
Confidence
One of the most important things which the company looks into the employee is confidence. Low confidence can lead to lower work output and it can make you a bad team player. From an organization’s point of view, a confident employee can do the job with more efficiency and quality. Point to remember is that a participant who is underconfident and one who is overconfident, both are not good for an organization.
Command over Language
In this age of globalization, English is a need because you can connect and contact with everybody no matter which country he or she belongs to. In one line “English is the language of businesses today”. You may not be proficient in speaking English because it is not your native tongue but you must be able to convey your thoughts and understand others.
Co-operation
Every organization functions on team participation. So what should a team member be like - supportive, flexible, should be able to take initiation, should possess leadership quality, decision-making ability. Talking about my personal experience, I was judged on the basis of interaction, confidence, command over the English language and knowledge about the topic.
Panel evaluation method
It may vary from panel to panel. In my case, there was only one examiner and he judged us on the basis of interaction, confidence, communication, and my knowledge about the topic.
He selected 3 out of 15 candidates who appeared fro the GD.
But it is not the same for every GD. It might be in the form of numbers or grades.
