Students’ Speak: Tips & strategies to ace GD round

Before we begin with the preparation method and strategies adopted, first let’s discuss, what a Group Discussion (GD) is. It is a formal conversation between a group of members.

A topic is given and the members of GD come out with the pros and cons, positive and negative effects. A member must represent one side and have to give effective points to hold their point of view. In the end, one should give a summary or outcome of the group discussion. Group discussion for recruitment: In a recruitment process, group discussion is an elimination round in which the students will be selected based on their performance.

Preparation Tips for GD Round

  • Learn basic points: First, try to learn the basic points that are important in a group discussion. Like, if you start the GD you get extra points, give everyone time to put their point, do not speak too much, if you summarise you have to give the conclusion taking everyone’s perspective in mind, always write down your points on a paper and do not interrupt anyone. Learn all these points first.
  • Watch group discussions on YouTube: After you have learnt the basic points, now try to see videos on YouTube and other media. From videos, you will get a broader idea of group discussions. This will give you the way to think on a specific topic and you will be ready to excel in your first group discussion.
  • Practice with classmates and friends: By practicing group discussions with your classmates and friends will give you the confidence that now you are ready to excel in your group discussions. Try to practice on different topics as these will increase your ability to think in a better way and you will always have a positive outlook.
  • Participate in group discussion events: The best technique to learn any linguistic skill is to practice and learn. Try to participate in the events that are being conducted in universities/colleges and try to give the best in every discussion. By participating in these events you will get the feel of actual group discussion and you will ace the next group discussion.
  • Attend seminars and tutorials: After learning the basic points, try to attend as many seminars and tutorials as you can. In seminars, you will get to learn things from professional persons and you will get a broader view of group discussion. Tips that you will learn are: How to observe?, How to become a good listener?, How to get more points by listening? and many other points. So, do attend them.
