A 10-year medical course in China?
In an effort to produce quality doctors and train more general medical practitioners to serve the countryside, China has plans to introduce a 10-year medical education program. The program will lay emphasis on improving the studentsβ level of clinical practice by training them in medical ethics and providing a formal residency before students can start practicing as doctors.
Under the program, medical students will have to go through two or three yearsβ residency training before becoming doctors or assistant to general medical practitioners in rural areas. So far, most of the Chinese medical students went straight to work after graduation.
As many as 125 Chinese universities have been chosen as the first batch of higher-education institutions to teach medical students under the initiative.
