The much awaited Common Entrance Test (CET) is all set to arrive from the next academic session. Common Entrance Test will be for all the students willing to take admissions into various medical colleges. The Union Health Ministry and the Medical Council of India (MCI) have come to a consensus to roll out CET for admission to all government, private medical colleges and deemed universities for MBBS course from the 2012-13 academic session.

According to MCI official, the decision was taken in a meeting on Monday, chaired by Union Health Ministry K Chandramouli. The meeting was also attended by official of MCI and CBSE. Nearly 8-10 lakh students are likely to appear for the maiden Common Entrance Test exam. According to sources, talks are going on for bringing institutes like AIIMS under CET's ambit. In this case AIIMS will not be able to hold an entrance examination of its own. According to an official the top students can go for AIIMS and the idea is to have one single medical entrance exam in the country.

In addition to this, the new MCI governing board is taking a fresh look at the revised medical curriculum prepared by its predecessors. An MCI governing body has also confirmed that after India's revised medical education curriculum is finalized it will be put up on the website.

The entrance exam will be held for MBBS courses offered by all 271 medical colleges-138 run by governments and 133 under private management. These colleges offer over 31,000 MBBS seats.
