Starting this academic session, MBBS aspirants may feel a sense of relief with the introduction of the first-ever online counseling for MBBS admissions. For apportioning nearly 2,000 MBBS and BDS seats in medical colleges in India, the Supreme Court is awaiting MCI's (Medical Council of India) comeback on a proposal by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) to conduct online counseling for MBBS students.

Key highlights of the proposal:

  • Entrants qualifying All India Undergraduate Entrance Examination or five times number of seats available under the all-India quota (whichever is less) will be eligible for the virtual counseling.
  • After indicating their choice of course and college online, eligible students will now have a total of three rounds of online allotment instead of the existing two.
  • Following the first round, entrants will receive a provisional allotment letter online. After receiving the same, they will have to report to the allotted medical/dental college within 10 days. After this the respective colleges will scrutinize the documents received.
  • Failing to take admission within 10 days, applicants will have to surrender their claim of admission. Besides this, they would also not be taken into account while allotment of seats during the rounds of counseling to be carried on later.
  • However, aspirants getting enrolled after the first round may mention their choice of course or college to be upgraded and considered in the next rounds of counseling, based on availability of seats.
  • National Informatics Centre will be responsible for organizing the online counseling process

Till now, Delhi being the hub of allotment of 15% all-India quota of MBBS and BDS seats in various medical colleges, students had to travel long distances from their native place to the metros to attend the counseling sessions. Students from as far as Chennai, Kolkata and Mumbai were counseled via video conferencing. However, the onset of this first-of-its-kind virtual counseling will bring in some revolutionary benefits and changes too. These are:

  • Convenience of online counseling to students, instead of them having to appear in person
  • Reduction in the expenditure for the candidates as well as the Government
  • Though faceless, online counseling will maintain transparency
  • Reduction in the number of seats that remain vacant at the end of quota counseling
