MCI Will Expand Its Role By Grading Medical Colleges
There is no trusted education agency or statutory body in India to grade, assess and rank medical colleges right now, which makes it difficult for a student to decide whether he/she should seek admission in Christian Medical College, Vellore; All India Institute of Medical Sciences; or some other medical college in Maharashtra or Tamil Nadu. Recognizing the needs of the hour, Medical Council of India (MCI) has decided to expand it role from just recognizing medical colleges and licensing doctors to checking all the medical institutes on various parameters such as infrastructure and faculty strength that are crucial to provide high-quality medical education to future doctors.
MCI Vision 2015 Document spells out several sweeping reforms in both undergraduate and postgraduate medical education and training programmes that lay out a road map for Indian healthcare to raise its level to global standards and perhaps excel that in near future. This document has touched several aspects that need due attention such as making curriculum of medical programmes more interactive, clinical-oriented, practical and contemporary; adopting new technologies and teaching methods to improve the effectiveness of the programmes; regulating patient inflow and raising the quality of medical research; and finally assessing the medical colleges.
The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) has already graded some of the medical colleges, but there are many more to be assessed and graded. MCI might take the leads from NAAC to develop processes that it will need to grade the remaining colleges.
It is not clear yet, whether the grading system will be mandatory for all medical colleges or not.
