With the onset of admission season, different questions are propping up in a student's mind. The biggest dilemma arises with which career option to choose. Medicine, a traditional career choice is one of the most sought after profession which brings immense social status. And even after years, medicine as a career has not lost its sheen. However, with the sorry state of demand-supply ratio, there are not many options for students to look for in India.

In this scenario, students can look for pretty good options for medicine as a career in overseas countries for those missing out. Previously, USSR was one of the most favorite destinations in the 80s and 90s, whereas China emerged out to be an alternative option during the last five years. The reason is owed to seat availability, affordable fee and most importantly excellent academic facilities.

Medicine as a career brings a pride, which various other professional courses fail to offer. At least, a popular perception prevails among middle class parents, who feel proud to tell that their children are pursuing medicine.
However, there are certain other important factors which drive the Indian students to medical colleges both in countries like China and former USSR countries.

It is mandatory for student to clear "Skill Test", after completing house surgeon. The reason for this, that it is only after this examination, students can obtain Registration or permanent license to practice in India. According to V.R. Ram, Chief Executive, Medico Abroad, it will be a screening test for students from foreign medical colleges. As per another important revelation, the introduction of compulsory one-year Rural Service after the completion of House Surgeon the total duration of MBBS course might go up to 6.5 to 7 years (4.5 study+ 1 year House Surgeon + 1 year Rural Service).

On the other hand, MCI (Medical Council of India) has given a special advantage to medical colleges of China. Under this, they officially approved the last year internship to be completed by Indian student in India itself. Thus Indian students will be effectively studying for only 5 years in China.

In 2010, the fees payable under B category seats in Andhra Pradesh was Rs.2.75 lakh which is proposed to be hiked by private colleges this year. Complied together with both hostel and food expenses, the annual expenses will fall nearly Rs.3.50 lakh to Rs. 4 lakh, which might give extra burden for middle income group parents.

According to Management quota seats under β€˜C β€˜ Category, the packages are available at of Rs. 35 lakh and above which is higher compared to last year. On the other hand, the fee in China and former USSR countries is far less.
A majority of these students have cleared their MCI Screening Test in their first attempt and currently practicing in various Government and Corporate Hospitals.

As per Mr. Jaipaul Reddy of St. Joseph's Consultants, the first batch of medical graduate students from foreign universities dates back to 2009.

In addition to this, the advanced infrastructure, buildings, labs, equipment, hospitals, and the liberal government funding makes it possible for medical institutions of China and former USSR countries to provide low fee without making any compromises on quality. The good part is that quality Indian food is made available to students by the consultants who send them.

Another positive point is that trained faculty from advanced countries like US, UK educate the students. This is done with the optimum utilization of Audio visual aids, computer simulation labs, modern equipments along with high teaching standards.

Some other value added features also includes hi-end labs, modern equipment, reputed hospitals, digital libraries, which help in enhancing the studies, comfortable hostels, Internet centers, provisional stores within the campus.
Among all these things, the most important aspect is interactions with foreign students, understanding of different cultures, abroad travel and the interaction brings immense maturity. Students also get to learn in a competitive environment and develop their personality to the fullest.
