THE SREE Sankaracharaya University of Sanksrit (SSUS) at Kalady in Ernakulam is all set to offer a novel Ayurveda diploma course with a special focus on Health Tourism and Sanskrit-related subjects from this academic year.
 
Scope of the course
 
" The course aims at utilising the unexplored treasure of the traditional ayurveda knowledge for the benefit of the health tourism sector personnel, to the research and academic work of the Sanskrit scholars/academicians/enthusiasts, to add to the knowledge base of the existing personnel, create an employable skill amongst the prospective job seekers, to promote responsible and authentic health tourism which relies on the traditional Ayurveda texts which are hitherto remaining ignored by the emerging industry," said KV Ajith Kumar, co-ordinator of the course.
 
The course is being offered by the faculty of Sanskrit literature under the Department of Sahitya.
 
The course consists of four semesters. The evaluation will be done according to the credit system. The total credit of the programme is 64 (32 internal + 32 external).
 
Syllabus
 
In the first semester, the syllabus includes communicative English, preliminary course in Sanskrit, medical tradition of India and the cultural history of Kerala. In second semester, the Ayurvedic tradition of Kerala, the principles and practices in tourism, concept of health and treatment in Ayurveda, geography and project on health tourism will be taught. In the third semester, Kerala Ayurveda panchakarma, hospitality management, bio-diversity of medicinal plants in Kerala, Ayurveda in the background of Indian darsanas are the subjects while in the fourth semester, the focus is on human resources management, foreign language and cross cultural training and study on the local health traditions and project work (Each subject carries four credits).
 
Faculty
 
"For English, Sanskrit, History, Ayurveda and Geography we will have permanent teachers, while tourism, computer and foreign language will be taught by eminent guest faculty, " said Ajith Kumar.
 
Any graduate with minimum 45 per cent marks can apply for this two-year semster course. ``Provision is there to discontinue after the successful completion of the first year and to get a diploma certificate. Those who complete two years will get an advanced diploma certificate, " he said .
 
Advantage
 
The advantage of this regular course is that the students can complete the course in five years from the date of admission. Among the 20 seats, five are reserved for Ayurveda and tourism sector.
 
Applications invited
 

Applications can be collected from the Campus Director's Office, Kalady, by paying Rs 100 by cash or crossed DD taken in favour of Finance Officer payable at Union Bank of India, Kalady, along with two self-addressed covers with Rs 10- stamp. The last date for submitting applications is 20-6-2009.
 
Timing of the course : 9.30 am to 3.30pm
