In an effort to produce mid-level health professionals for rural areas, a new three-year Bachelor of Science (Community Health) course is planned for launch in various states of the country from the academic year 2013-14.

Proposed as Bachelor of Rural Health Care (BRHC) earlier, the name of the course has been changed in consultation with the Medical Council of India (MCI).

Course Details:

  • Name: Bachelor of Science (Community Health)
  • Course duration: 3 years + 6 months of rotational internship
  • Eligibility: Individuals who have completed 10+2 exams with Physics, Chemistry and Biology as their subjects
  • Admission and deployment: District-based

Graduates after acquiring this degree will be employed as Community Health Officers (CHOs) by states. Besides this, a task force has also been formed to frame norms for requirements of physical infrastructure, facilities needed in rural health schools and to examine aspects regarding introduction of the course.

To be launched with in-built safeguards, the course is expected to address the serious concern of shortage of human resources in healthcare sector in rural areas.
