CBSE asked schools to 'go extra mile' to provide quality education to the children with special needs.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) released guidelines for the commencement of education of Children with ‘special needs’. Earlier, the Board released a circular directing all CBSE affiliated schools to cover ‘all’ children including those with no access to a digital device in the teaching-learning process. Now, the guidelines are released in continuation of the same circular.

Keeping in mind the special needs of these children, CBSE asked schools to 'go extra mile' to provide quality education to them. The Board also said that the schools must make sure that all children with special needs and children whose parents are involved in essential services receive accessible and adapted learning as per their specific needs.

CBSE directed schools to treat each child individually according to his/her needs. The instructions also included assessing each child's individual needs and making relevant adjustments, and necessary replacements to print media such as audio or other formats in instruction, pictures, captions, larger prints, and sign-language options in all forms of the learning material.

CBSE also suggested assistive technology, simplified homework, flexible scheduling and deadlines and formative assessment. Training of teachers and providing them based resources on how to teach children with special needs in remote and online settings are also one of the few directions given by the Board to the schools. Schools are also required to provide parents expert advice from special educators and counsellors.

The board also emphasized that all CBSE-affiliated schools must follow the alternative academic calendar released by NCERT. The Alternative Academic Calendar not only includes curriculum but also suggests activities to promote experiential learning.
