The CBSE has decided to re-introduce communicative English and Sanskrit in Classes 9 and 10 curriculum from 2022 and 2023.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has decided to restore Sanskrit and Communicative English in Classes 9 and 10 curricula to bring them in line with the National Education Policy (NEP 2020), according to a noted media report. Communicative English will be a part of the Class 9 curriculum from 2022-23 and Sanskrit will be introduced in the Class 10 curriculum in the academic session 2023-24.

English and Sanskrit were being taught at two levels in secondary schools till they were discontinued in 2018-19. English was taught at two levels - communicative and core. The communicative level involved content on communication skills and day-to-day language usage. While the core courses focused on literature and writing. These will now be restored to the curriculum.

The CBSE director (academics) Joseph Emmanuel wrote to principals of CBSE schools, β€œIn pursuance to recommendation of National Education Policy 2020 regarding availability of all subjects and corresponding assessments at two levels as per the needs and interest of students, CBSE is planning to offer English and Sanskrit at two levels from the academic year 2022-23 in class 9 and subsequently in class 10 in the year 2023-24. The Board will offer communicative based curricula which CBSE used to offer in these languages till the year 2018 in these languages.”

β€œAs NEP stresses on using an approach to learning that highlights the importance of real life contexts and enabling students to apply their knowledge in real-life scenarios, communicative approach to languages would certainly develop the student’s competence to communicate in the target language (communicative competence), with an enhanced focus on real-life situations,” he further added.
