In another significant move to increase access to education for underprivileged children, the Delhi government raised the EWS income limit from ₹2.5 lakh to ₹5 lakh. This expansion is expected to allow more children from economically disadvantaged backgrounds to benefit from quality education.
Delhi EWS Admission 2025: In a landmark move to ensure fairness and transparency, the Delhi government successfully conducted the first-ever computerized draw of lots for the admission of students under the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and Disadvantaged Group (DG) categories for entry-level classes in private schools. This event was held on Wednesday for a total of 42,000 seats, marking a significant step towards greater educational equity.
Transparent Admission Process
Addressing the importance of the computerized draw, Delhi Education Minister Ashish Sood acknowledged the previous lack of transparency in the admission process. He emphasized the government's commitment to fairness this year under the guidance of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta.
“This year, the draw of lots was organized in the presence of parents and media to ensure fairness,” said Sood. He added that the process was designed to eliminate any biases, providing a level playing field for all applicants.
Expanded Access to Education: EWS Income Limit Raised
In another significant move to increase access to education for underprivileged children, the Delhi government raised the EWS income limit from ₹2.5 lakh to ₹5 lakh. This expansion is expected to allow more children from economically disadvantaged backgrounds to benefit from quality education.
This change was part of a broader effort to improve educational opportunities for children from economically weaker sections of society, providing them with a better chance at a brighter future.
Application Statistics and Available Seats
For the 2023-2024 academic year, the admission process saw an overwhelming response. According to Minister Sood, the following number of applications were received for various entry-level classes:
- Nursery: 24,933 seats available with 1,00,854 applications.
- Kindergarten (KG): 4,682 seats available with 40,488 applications.
- Class 1: 14,430 seats available with 62,598 applicants.
The government also shared that approximately 3,134 schools participated in the admission process, with 1,299 schools for nursery, 622 schools for KG, and 1,213 schools for Class 1.
Children Initiate the Draw for Fairness
To further highlight the importance of transparency, two children were given the privilege of initiating the draw. Bhavesh, a resident of Shamnath Marg, pressed the button for the KG and Class 1 draws, while Bhavika initiated the nursery draw. This symbolic act was in line with the government's focus on making the process student-centered and transparent.
Ensuring Integrity and Security of the Draw Process
The integrity of the computerized draw was paramount. To avoid any potential interference, Minister Sood stated that no mobile phones were allowed inside the room during the event, ensuring that the process was free from any human intervention. The Director of Education and other officials, as well as media representatives and parents, adhered to these stringent security measures.
Once the draw was successfully completed, the data was immediately secured, and a three-member committee was tasked with sending the signed data in a CD format to the Directorate of Education (DoE) for further processing.
Document Verification and Final Admission
Following the computerized draw, all students selected will receive a notification by the evening, and they will be called to the Directorate of Education (DoE) office for document verification. Sood assured that once the DoE verifies the documents, schools will be unable to deny admission based on any discrepancies in documentation.
Extension for Special Categories
To ensure inclusivity, the government has also extended the registration period for students with special needs, transgender students, and other reserved categories. The government noted that the number of applications in these categories has been lower than the available seats, and the extended deadline aims to encourage more applications.
The computerized draw marks a significant shift in how entry-level admissions are handled in Delhi’s private schools, aligning with the government’s vision of promoting fairness, transparency, and accessibility in education. The Delhi government’s proactive steps this year are aimed at ensuring that all children, regardless of their socio-economic background, have an equal opportunity to secure quality education.
With over 42,000 seats available across entry-level classes and more inclusive admission policies, the future of education in Delhi looks promising for underprivileged students seeking opportunities to excel.
