The Ministry of Education has approved 1,76,728 smart classrooms in schools across India under the Samagra Shiksha scheme. These classrooms will be in both rural and urban areas. The government also plans to give high-speed internet to more than 16,000 rural secondary schools through BharatNet to improve digital learning.

According to Jayant Chaudhary, Minister of State for Education, Uttar Pradesh has the highest number of smart classrooms – 1,34,533. Other states include Madhya Pradesh (12,573), Odisha (11,776), Rajasthan (10,476), and Bihar (11,568). This data was shared in the Lok Sabha on November 10, 2025.

What is Samagra Shiksha?

Samagra Shiksha is a government scheme for school education. Its aim is to provide equal and good-quality education as per the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. Under this scheme, smart classrooms are set up in government and aided schools from Class 6 to Class 12.
Each school gets ₹2.40 lakh as a one-time grant and ₹38,000 every year for digital content and resources. These classrooms will have digital boards, LCD/LED screens, laptops, desktops, printers, scanners, and other devices.

UDISE Data and Funding

The data comes from UDISE+ and funds approved in Project Approval Board (PAB) meetings for 2025-26. The government also held extra meetings to approve these facilities in 32 states and UTs, including Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Ladakh, and Daman & Diu.

To provide internet, the government has approved ₹6,064 crore under BharatNet Phase-II. This will give broadband connectivity to schools through BSNL. The Ministry has also identified 16,071 rural schools for high-speed internet using Optical Line Terminal (OLT) technology.
