NCERT has begun preparing Artificial Intelligence textbooks for Classes 11 and 12 to introduce senior secondary students to basic AI concepts and applications.

National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has started work on new textbooks on Artificial Intelligence for Classes 11 and 12.

The books are being prepared by a subject group within NCERT and will introduce students to basic ideas behind AI and its everyday uses. Officials close to the development said that the focus will be on helping students understand how AI works, where it is used, and what its limits are.

This is the first time NCERT is developing separate, full-length textbooks on AI for senior secondary classes. Until now, AI was taught mainly through short modules or skill-based activities.

Reportedly, the content will not be limited to programming. Instead, it will explain how AI is used in areas such as search engines, image recognition, language tools and digital platforms that students already interact with.

NCERT has been adding technology-related content at different school levels over the past few years. In some middle-school vocational books, students are already exposed to simple AI-based activities mainly to show how technology is applied in real life.

Decision has been taken due to growing need for students to have basic AI awareness before entering higher education. Colleges and employers now expect students to be familiar with how digital systems work, even in non-technical fields.

New textbooks will be introduced after internal review and approvals. NCERT is also expected to work on teacher support and classroom readiness before the books are brought into use.
