Tamil Nadu Government has cancelled the half yearly examinations for all government and government aided schools in the state. The state did not share any update on possible school reopening dates.

Tamil Nadu Education Minister KA Sengottaiyan has announced that there would be no half yearly examinations this year for the government and government aided schools. With schools still closed in the state following the lockdown, the Education Minister ordered the cancellation of the examinations.

However, the minister has given private schools, the option to either cancel the half yearly examinations or conduct them online. With schools not allowed to reopen just yet, the decision vests with the school administration.

As for reopening of schools in the state, the government has not announced any date yet. The colleges in Tamil Nadu have reopened but with the recent spike of cases at IIT Madras, the government has issued a stern warning to the educational institutes in the state. It has asked institutes to follow the norms and SOPs to prevent the spread of the pandemic in the state. It also warned of serious action in case they are found flouting norms.

The state has also not announced any dates for conducting TN 12th and TN 10th board examinations 2021.Β 

State Health Secretary J Radhakrishnan told media that detailed guidelines and SOPs had been issued already by the government. β€œIf such norms, outlined in two Government Orders, were not followed to combat the pathogen spread, action would be taken against the management of institutions under The Epidemic Diseases Act and the Tamil Nadu Public Health Act,” he said.

As for IIT Madras, as many as 183 cases were reported till December 15. The students are all stable and are being treated at the state run King’s Institute of Preventive Medicine and Research.
