IIT Kanpur Launches Wadhwani Innovation Centre to Accelerate Life Sciences, MedTech Research

IIT Kanpur has launched the Wadhwani Innovation Centre for Life Sciences and Medical Technologies to help healthcare innovations move from research labs to market.

Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur has launched Wadhwani Innovation Centre for Life Sciences and Medical Technologies (WIN-CoE) to strengthen translation of research into products and solutions for healthcare sector. This Centre has been established as a Centre of Excellence (CoE) with focus on developing, validating and commercialising promising innovations in life sciences and medical technologies.

Wadhwani Innovation Centre for Life Sciences and Medical Technologies will receive USD 5 million in funding over five years to support high-potential research and help promising technologies progress from the laboratory stage to real-world healthcare applications. The inauguration of the Centre took place in presence of Dr Upendra Kumar Singh, Director General, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), New Delhi.

IIT Kanpur Centre to focus on healthcare innovations

WIN-CoE will build on IIT Kanpur's research capabilities and support innovations across several areas of healthcare. Its focus areas will include therapeutics, regenerative medicine, drug delivery, vaccines, medical devices and diagnostics. The Centre will also work on emerging and critical healthcare areas, including neurodegenerative diseases, mental health, antimicrobial resistance and AI-enabled healthcare services.

Support for validation, IP and commercialisation

The new Centre will provide researchers with support at different stages of technology development. This will include validation, intellectual property (IP) processes and regulatory requirements, which are essential for converting research outcomes into commercially viable healthcare products.

WIN-CoE will also facilitate connections between researchers and industry partners. These collaborations are expected to support technology transfer, entrepreneurship and commercialisation of innovations developed through research.
