Panjab university grants scholarships under various categories to 836 students

The College Development Council, Panjab University, has announced that it has granted scholarships to 836 eligible students under five different categories for the 2020-21 session. The University had approved scholarships to students during a meeting held under the chairmanship of Vice-Chancellor Raj Kumar.

The scholarship has been awarded under the categories of means-cum-merit, physically disabled, sports, single girl child and AIDS/cancer patients. No application was received under the youth welfare and transgender categories.

A CDC committee also granted an honorarium of INR 3,000 to 67 nodal officers for 2020-2021 session and 62 nodal officers for 2021-2022 session. The committee also cleared a sum of INR 57,136 as fee concession for college teachers’ wards enrolled in PU’s self-financing courses in the 2021-2022 session.

Meanwhile, the Panjab University campus witnessed several protests from students against several decisions of the administration. Students for Society (SFS) held protests at the Vice-Chancellor's office demanding to completely roll back the hike in mess fees, canteen fees and student center rates.

Several students were also reported to have joined the demonstration and missed their classes. SFS said that the University administration has said that the fee hike is due to inflation and claimed it to be complete sham. Adding the varsity is public-funded, the student body demanded that the administration must ensure the availability of food at a subsidised rate instead of a hike in fees for the common students. The students' union also complained of favouritism in the allotment of hostels.
