Plea against OU's refusing permission to Rahul Gandhi event dismissed: Telangana HC
Telangana High Court has today dismissed the petition challenging the Osmania University (OU) refusing to give permission to conduct an interactive session of students with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on the University's campus on May 7. Several congress workers had earlier challenged the rejection of their application by the varsity for permission to conduct the interactive session.
Justice B Vijayasen Reddy while upholding Osmania University's decision dismissed the petition. It must be noted that the Osmania University had earlier denied the permission for the event due to various reasons including that they passed a resolution last year not allowing any political activity on the campus. Along with this, the varsity stated that the election of some employee unions is scheduled and examinations for some courses are underway. A group of students is also preparing for the recruitment tests that were announced by the state government, OU official said.
Following the OU authorities' decision, Congress party spokesperson Manavatha Roy, who was one of the applicants for Gandhi's proposed meeting approached the High Court challenging rejection of their application.
Some students also opposed that the meeting might cause a law and order problem on the campus and in view of that, it is not feasible for the Osmania University to accord permission for the meeting, a letter written by OU Registrar to Roy, said.
The petitioners had also mentioned in the letter that the minister wanted to meet the OU students as well as unemployed youth for the purpose of nation-building and that there is no chance of any law and order problems. It was aimed to meet students and have interaction with them. There were no political motives behind this, they stated.
