University of Bristol, UK delegation visits JMI to explore academic collaborations

A delegation from the University of Bristol, United Kingdom visited Jamia Millia Islamia, faculty of engineering and technology to explore future academic and research collaborations.

JMI, faculty of engineering and technology, dean, Mini Shaji Thomas greeted University of Bristol delegation, dean, faculty of engineering, Ian Bond. The main aim of the interaction was to identify the areas in which both the universities could potentially explore collaborations with one another. The common areas included, earthquake engineering, materials, sustainability and environment and communication among others.

The meeting commences with a presentation from Thomas where she elaborated the research profile of the university, followed by a presentation on University of Bristol's research higlights. University of Bristol, faculty international director, faculty of science, Charl Faul delivered a lecture on “Materials Chemistry Against Climate Change-Using Chemistry For Good!”, organized by department of environmental science, faculty of engineering and technology, JMI.

This lecture focused on his research in materials chemistry, synthetic polymers with tunable structures and properties by using reactions to change the bonds in molecules. Such materials have multiple applications in fields like environmental science where it can be used to capture CO2 and help fight against climate change. These can also be used to replace lithium-ion batteries and in effluent treatment.

Faul further elaborated on the Hansen solubility parameters and how he and his team have designed a toolkit that can calculate parameters for particular reactions. He concluded his lecture by talking about his future plans in the field. The lecture was followed by an in-depth session of question and answer by both them teams.
