Dehradun university hikes MBBS fees; 124 students fail to appear in final exam
As many as 124 students have failed to appear in the final year MBBS examination after Swami Rama Himalayan University in Dehradun hiked the MBBS fees for both state quota and management quota seats.
Amid the growing concern about the highly-expensive medical education in India, Swami Rama Himalayan University in Dehradun has suddenly increased the MBBS fees for both state quota and management quota. It affected a total of 124 students who could not appear in their final-year MBBS exam held on Tuesday as they didn't pay the increased amount.
At a time when after the Covid-19 pandemic, the country needs more doctors, the Russia-Ukraine war has highlighted that it is really difficult for medical aspirants to get a medical seat in India due to the reservation system and high prices of these courses and hence they choose to study abroad.
Students reportedly barred from appearing in final MBBS exams
As per the TOI report, the students didn't pay the increased amount and hence they were allegedly barred from appearing in their final examination.
After the MBBS fees are increased, the institute is charging INR 16 lakh for state quota seats and INR 23 lakh for the management quota seats.
When the students had joined the university the MBBS tuition fee was INR 18 lakh but mid-way, the university filed a petition in High Court seeking permission to increase MBBS fees to INR 34 lakh. The matter is sub-judice in court.
On February 28, the students of the 2017 batch were asked to submit the additional fees till March 5 if they wish to appear for the final MBBS exams.
University claims fee issue is resolved
The university's press statement says, "The fee issue has been resolved. Students have returned to their hostels and they have agreed to pay the deficit amount. Exams held on March 8 and March 9 will be rescheduled for March 17 and March 19, respectively. If the university wins the case in court only then will it use that cheque, else it will return it. There is no fee hike until then."
